Active Energy Systems is commercializing advanced thermal storage to help commercial building owners lower cooling costs, strengthen cooling resiliency, and achieve their sustainability goals while allowing electric utilities to better manage the electric grid.
Icephobic Heat Exchange (IHEX)
IHEX is the ability of a cold surface to freeze water without the latter sticking to the freezing surface. It is achieved through passive surface chemistry, namely by coating a heat exchanger with a certain polymer and immersing it all in a certain oil. When IHEX is applied to a heat exchanger, is leads to the practical ability of using the latter as the evaporator of an "ice chiller" which then makes an ice slurry. This in turn leads to many favorable technological characteristics such as high efficiency, high maximum discharge potential, and spatial flexibility in the product's deployment.
