Developing fiber-optic based, thermal sensor (temperature) solution that may be embedded in large assets, like transformers, and provide a comprehensive thermal picture.

Grid Modernization

tFITS™

Incubatenergy, Ameren Accelerator, PitchDay2019

The tFITS™ is an optical fiber the size of a human hair, in lengths of up to thousands of feet, is embedded throughout a device, deep inside its core. Laser pulses are fired down the fiber, and the reflected frequency of the laser light is analysed to produce information about the health and status of the equipment Brillouin optical time domain analysis (BOTDA). The fiber itself is a sensor, not merely a lead or wire for a point sensor, allowing temperature and strain to be measured over the length of the fiber. This allows utilities to detect what is going on deep inside the device, in real time. tFITs does not produce electromagnetic emissions and is immune to EMI/RF, and special high temperature or harsh environment fibers are also available. The tFITS™ solution is compatible with all utility communication protocols, allowing assets to become IoT-enabled devices.
