GTI Energy/Sierra Northern Railway Hydrogen Switcher Locomotive Project
Overview
Project Summary
LCRI co-sponsor GTI Energy, in collaboration with Sierra Northern Railway, is leading a project to develop and demonstrate a hydrogen fuel cell switching locomotive at the Port of West Sacramento. This California Energy Commission- supported project involves the integration of advanced hydrogen fuel cells, hydrogen storage, battery, and systems control technologies to replace a retired Tier 0 diesel-fueled switching locomotive. (See Figure 7). These validation efforts are intended to establish a platform for broader commercialization of hydrogen fuel cell locomotives for both short-line (for example, switching) and line-haul freight operations
