Lithium-Ion Battery Performance Testing Project
Overview
Project Summary
The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) procured a 150 kW / 600 kWh lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS) consisting of three modular utility-scale batteries. The storage system was installed and tested at the battery testing laboratory of Southern California Edison (SCE), where its performance was evaluated across a variety of metrics. Once the storage system was commissioned, the data collected from the system was analyzed to better understand the system’s actual performance in the field.
The objective of this project was to work towards improving the technical understanding of distribution-level energy storage technology, which may increase grid reliability, enable increased penetration of variable renewable energy resources, and manage peak demand (allowing for the deferment of additional investments in distribution-level delivery infrastructure).
