Dingle Peninsula 2030
Overview
Project Summary
In April 2018, the Dingle Sustainable Energy Community (SEC) was established by Dingle Creativity and Innovation Hub. The SEC network is coordinated by SEAI (Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland) with the aim to encourage and support the involvement of communities in the transition to a low carbon future. In June 2019, MaREI Centre provided the Energy Master Plan for the Peninsula analysing feasible energy solutions. Renewable energy options considered for the preliminary study are:
- Anaerobic digester, the analysis has highlighted that the most valuable feedstock is silage, which may provide up to 280 GWh of biogas per year;
- Solar PV system;
- Wind energy;
- Hydropower.
Result of the energy demand reduction and the increase in the use of local renewable resources, could save the peninsula as much as €8 million. Furthermore, it will create a more environmentally and economically future on the Dingle Peninsula.
