Westmill Wind Farm Co-operative
Overview
Project Summary
The Westmill Wind Farm Co-op was the first 100% community owned onshore wind farm to be built in the south of England. The five turbine site at Watchfield, Swindon, SN6 8TH was commissioned in March 2008. Each turbine (Siemens Bonus 1.3 MW) has an installed capacity of 1.3 MW and the wind farm produces pollution-free electricity for over 2,500 average homes bringing social, environmental and economic benefits to the local area. Funding of the £7.6m project was from a public share issue and a loan from the Co-op bank allowing local ownership of the site.
