Dardesheim (Germany's Renewable Energy Town)
Overview
Project Summary
Dardesheim has pioneered the use of renewable energy sources in Germany. Outside the small rural village, 82 MW of wind turbines have been installed since the early 90's. Besides wind power, fifteen solar PV systems (1.15 MW) also produce green electricity demand since 2005. In addition, household solar collectors on roofs provide warm water and there are several biomass-based heating systems in town. Ownership of wind park shares is limited to local residents only and by 2014 about 90% of Dardesheim residents are involved in the project. Co-benefits of the project include boosting the regional economy and generating local energy self sufficiency. As already intended at the beginning of the project, the profit has also been used for further expansion of renewable energy in the region as well as for supporting the development of local infrastructure and other regional projects.
